TANNING FACTS: Tanning Bed / Solarium Facts
Fact #1: A new study by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency study found:
People under the age of 35 raise the risk of forming a dangerous melanoma skin cancer by an 98 per cent if they use solariums.
An individual's chance of developing a melanoma - the rarest but deadliest form of skin cancer - increased by 22 per cent if they had used a solarium just once.
In late 2007, Amanda Eather (25 year old) died of melonoma after a 2-year batter with the disease. Her mother Tracey Eather, said Amanda had rarely exposed herself to the sun but had used solariums. [1]
Fact #2: People who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. [2]
Fact #3: First exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent. [3]
Fact #4: Frequent tanners using new high-pressure sunlamps may receive as much as 12 times the annual UVA dose compared to the dose they receive from sun exposure. [4]
Fact #5: The indoor tanning industry has an annual estimated revenue of $5 billion. [5]
Fact #6: In a study of the effects of suntanning, researchers believe an explanation for tan fans' dedication to the sun & tanning beds - despite the repeated warnings that it can cause skin to not only age more quickly, but also become cancerous - is due to the relaxing effect of UV exposure. [6]
Fact #7: In July 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Working Group, part of the World Health Organisation, classified UV radiation-emitting tanning devices as carcinogenic to humans, the highest classification, along with asbestos and tobacco. [7]
